TECH FEATURES: OREGON HANDMADE BICYCLE SHOW PART 1
November 4, 2009

The Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show (OHBS) is part of the six week Oregon Manifest that celebrates the bike culture in the Northwest. The Manifest features cyclocross races, seminars, the Oregon Constructor’s Design Challenge, builders race and even the single speed cyclocross world championships. The OHBS brought together 40 of the best bicycle craftsmen from the Northwest, as well as the finalist from the Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Design Challenge. Road Bike Action was in attendance.

Signal Cycles was launched two years ago at the 2007 NAHBS, and had two of the cleanest looking bikes at the show. The fillet brazed cyclocross featured and integrated seatmast and internal cable routing.  www.signalcycles.com

The custom built stem features internal cable routing for the front brake and extended steerer tube clamp to replace headset spacers.

The rear brake is internally routed through the top tube, exiting the at the rear of the seat tube junction. The single side mounted cable stop adds a custom touch.

The Signal road bike, like the cross bike, is fillet brazed and was mated to a carbon fork with a Shimano Ultegra group. Fillet brazed frames run $2000.00.

A photo doesn't do the craftsmanship on the Signal justice. The fillet brazing on the Signal is flawless.

The dropouts on the Signal are laser cut and machined to save weight.

Triple Three Fabrication is a Seattle based company headed up by frame builders Max and Bernard.  At the OHBS they were showing off  Columbus tubed stainless steel, single speed cross bike. The steel front triangle is mated to carbon seat stays and an Edge carbon cross fork. www.333fab.com

The rear dropouts on the Triple Three Fabrication are machined pieces of art that allow horizontal adjustment when running a single speed setup. For the geared set there is a rear derailleur hanger.

Renovo has been making wood frames for a couple of years now, but until recently the frames consisted of a wood front triangle mated to a Columbus built carbon rear. For 2010 Renovo has introduced the R4 Pursuit, a new full wood model with a sloping top tube design. www.renovobikes.com

The aluminum dropouts on the Renovo have an industrial look that is in contrast to the smooth lines of the R4 Pursuit.

Courage Cycles was on hand showing off their cyclocross team model that Road Bike Action featured in the November issue. The custom made steel frame was built up with Shimano Ultegra components, Edge wheels and cyclocross fork. www.ridecourage.com

Courage Cycles was showing off this prototype chainguard designed to work with Shimano cranks. While the prototype on display was a pre-production plastic version the final production model will be aluminum. The Courage chainguard will be available within a couple months.

The Courage rear dropouts are some of the nicest in the industry.

English Cycles showed up and surprised everyone with an 11.8-pound steel bike. While the bike featured quite a collection of lightweight parts, frame weight stills come in at the 1300-gram mark with the integrated seatpost. www.englishcycles.com

Cielo Cycles are handmade by Chris King, the man behind the legendary headsets that bear his name. This Cielo was constructed as part of the Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Design Challenge. The purpose of the design challenge was to create the next-wave of transportation bikes  and to inspire frame builders and designers to develop integrated, and spectacular solutions for the everyday rider. Each bike was judged on the criteria of innovation, handling, presentation, load carrying, security, utility and quality. The bikes also had to survive the 77-mile builders race that was sponsored by Rapha clothing. www.cielo.chrisking.com

The detail on the Cielo extends past the frame, with matching water bottles, frame pump and fenders.

To meet the security requirements of the Constructor's Design Challenge the Cielo features an integrated cable lock.

Winter Bicycles was displaying this striking gold painted track frame with a one-piece custom bar and stem, and Cane Creek deep section carbon track wheels. www.winterbicycles.com

The one-piece bar and stem features flawless construction and paint.
