Sometimes breakaways stick and Stage Three of the Tour de France saw four riders off the front for most of the day, including American rider, Will Frischkorn of Garmin-Chipotle. The final few kilometers were filled with multiple attacks, but it was Samuel Dumoulin of Cofidis who crossed the line first ahead of Frischkorn to take the win.
Dumoulin story is about second chances. After turning pro in 2002, he had a serious scooter accident in 2004 put the talented rider in recovery mode and he has had to work his way back to the peloton. “My crash in 2004 was difficult so I had to make a comeback. I usually stay at the back of the peloton to avoid crashes…..my teammate told me to go with the break and we got away. It was a rainy, windy day, but the guys in the break from Garmin and Barloworld worked really well together.”
The emotional Dumoulin dedicated the win to his teammate Duclos-Lasalle, who crashed in the feedzone on Stage One, broke his wrist and had to abandon the race. When asked how he feels Dumoulin said,”It was really great to get in that break, it was good experience and good to see another Frenchman take the yellow and for me to get the win.”
Dumoulin is planning to get married in October to Magalie Lavenu, the daughter of AG2r Team Manager, Vincent Lavenu and said of his fiancée, “It was great to have her here and my parents and my brother.”
As if the excitement of winning a stage wasn’t enough, while on the podium, a protester jumped up on stage in front of Dumoulin and was adeptly thrown off the stage in a quick move by French cycling legend, Bernard Hinault.
