PAGE 8: PAGE 8 NEWSFLASH: ARMSTRONG WINS LEADVILLE 100

Lance Armstrong won the Leadville 100 on Saturday, breaking the old record by 15 minutes and besting defending champion and six-time winner Dave Wiens by close to a half hour. Armstrong finished the hundred mile epic in an astonishing 6:28:50, breaking Wien's record of 6:45:45. Armstrong benefited from having several allies in the race including Matt Shriver who set a vicious early pace in service of Armstrong. Shriver's pace broke the race apart with a group of eight rider going clear. The group included favorites, Armstrong, Wiens Travis Brown Len Zanni and Tinker Juarez. Juarez would later be forced to abandon when his seatpost clamp broke.
It was then on the Columbine climb that Armstrong rode away from the others with 60 miles still remaining in the race. Like several of his Tour de France stage wins, Armstrong never attacked he simply set a tempo that no one else could follow. Once free of the group Armstrong's lead steadily grew and at the top of the Columbine climb he had an 11-minute lead on Wiens. From this point Armstrong never looked back and at the end of the steep and rocky Powerline climb his lead had again increased to 18-minutes.
I strange repeat of last year Armstrong suffer a slow leak in his rear tire during the final miles of the race. Like Wiens, who suffered the same fate last year, Armstrong didn't risk changing the tire and instead won the race riding almost on the rim.
