FEATURES: NORTH AMERICAN HANDMADE BIKE SHOW PREVIEW
February 20, 2013

(Note, as a lead-up to this weekend's North American Handmade Bike Show, we'll be highlighting a few different frame builders who will be in attendance in Denver, CO. This first installment focuses on Boston, MA frame builder Craig Gaulzetti who used his back-in-the-day experience as a young racer in Belgium to start up his own bike brand. All of Craig's bikes are made to order and intended for the serious cyclist...in other words, rack eyelets are not his specialty! The following is from the folks at Gaulzetti...)

"We've said it before and we'll say it again: The Corsa is a race bike in its purest sense. It's designed to be ridden hard, used, abused mistreated and crashed - and then come back for more. We love building up super high end builds such as the previous gallery featuring a Campy Super Record EPS build. We share this feeling that the Corsa is dream-bike worthy with it's hand-made construction, racing pedigree, ride quality and customization. We also happen to believe, and we have no shortage of customers who also believe, that the Corsa is the ultimate workhorse race bicycle.

"This is a unique build and one of the most impressive complete bikes we've put together yet. This bike is a 53cm Corsa, which like all of our odd sized bikes features a longer, lower geometry than the even sized bikes. The Campagnolo EPS group is typical Campy: very functional, well-built and extremely beautiful in its attention to detail. We found the setup to be relatively easy - both the wiring and the programing were intuitive and streamlined. On this bike we mounted the EPS battery unit on the back side of the seat mast, which was the preference of this client and is one of several options we can employ for the mounting.

"Aesthetically, we matched our Gun Metal paint to Chris King's Pewter colored headset. The wheels were custom built by Luxe Wheelworks with the matching Pewter hubs from King laced up to wide, semi-aero section alloy clinchers from H Plus Son on which are mounted 25mm Michelin Pro Optimum front and rear specific clincher tires."

Full specs on this bike:
Frame: 53cm Corsa
Fork: Enve Components Tapered
Wheels: Luxe Alloy Clinchers (Archetype Rims from H Plus Son, Chris King hubs in Pewter and Sapim CX Ray Spokes)
Gruppo: Campagnolo Super Record EPS, full group
Handlebar: 3T Ergosum Team Carbon
 Stem: 3T Arx Team
 Saddle: Prologo Nago Evo TS
Tires: Michelin Pro Optimum 700x25 with latex inner tubes
Bar Tape: Lizard Skins DSP 1.8mm

"The Corsa is built with a custom drawn blend of butted 7000 series aluminum tubes from Dedacciai. The main tubes and chainstays are all very large in diameter to maximize front end and drivetrain stiffness while the seat stays are relatively thin, to reduce weight and helps smooth out the ride quality.

The Corsa is designed for stiffness, robustness and longevity, not to be the lightest bicycle possible. But, the most recent complete bikes we've built have ranged between 14.5 and 17 pounds depending on build kit and size. We spec the Enve Composites 2.0 fork with a 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 tapered steering column with each Gaulzetti frame. Presently, every frame is built to order." Contact: Gaulzetti Cycles

"We've also put together our Joe Racer kit, which features a parts mix that optimizes the balance between cost and performance. We've chosen a group based on SRAM's new Red drivetrain with its redesigned shifters, derailleurs and shift action bringing an extremely light, fast shifting and predictable performance. We've paired this drivetrain with some down-spec parts - items where the second or third tier SRAM parts cost far less without causing any noticeable degradation in performance, so Force level cranks and cassette, Rival level brakes and chain. We've also chosen the SL S wheels from Mavic, which are the current incarnation of Mavic's legendary workhorse Ksyrium line of wheels. We top this off with bar and stem from 3T and a saddle option from Prologo. All in all, it's a race-worthy, made-in-US, nearly indestructible bike package for less than $5k."
