Australian Simon Gerrans of the Cervelo Test Team sprinted clear on the brutal final 2km climb to claim victory in the 14th stage of the Tour of Italy over 172km from Campi Bisenzio to Bologna on Saturday. Simon Gerrans is no stranger so major victories, having pulled off a win on Stage 15 at the 2008 Tour de France while riding for Credit-Agricole. The 29-year old rider from Jamieson, Australia now lives in Monaco. Recent strong finishes include 6th at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, 8th at La Fleche-Wallonne and 7th at Amstel Gold.

Russian Denis Menchov of Rabobank maintained his overall lead with a 34sec advantage to 2007 winner Danilo Di Luca. With five climbs throughout the day the stage always looked suitable to a breakaway and a dozen riders escaped early in the day. But when it came to the final climb, which included sections at 16-20 percent gradients, Gerrans had the strongest legs. The head of the peloton finished just over a minute back with Levi Leipheimer and Ivan Basso losing three seconds on their rivals as they struggled with the furious pace set by Franco Pellizotti.
