Okay, let's see a show of hands? Who is headed to Austin next weekend for the 7th annual North American Handmade Bike Show? You can bet that Santa Cruz frame builder John Caletti (above) is going to be there. Although the most devout of bike geeks and lovers are still locked out of the corporate "big show" in Las Vegas (aka Interbike), the NAHBS is wide open to the public..and everyone with any chance of making the trip should plan to do so.
The North American Handmade Bike Show showcases the talents of individuals around the world whose art form is the bicycle. It aims to be a meeting point for both frame builders and consumers looking for handmade custom bicycles, for the sharing of ideas, and the promotion of a special industry with a rich history dating back to 1819. One of the key features of NAHBS is bringing the frame builders together at social events outside show hours. This has been a feature of the show since its first year in 2005.

Entering its seventh iteration, NAHBS has grown from a show with 23
exhibitors and 700 attendees in '05, to 165 exhibitors and 7200
attendees. Online registration still open, beat the rush - get your tickets now! Save $4-8 by purchasing your tickets in advance. Visit NAHBS to order your tickets now!
Here are the prices:
1 day: $18 advance (includes $1 transaction fee), $22 at the door
2 days: $32 advance (includes $1 transaction fee), $40 at the door
3 days: $51 advance (includes $1 transaction fee), $58 at the door
BUT WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BIKE????

A couple of weeks ago we posted a Most Beautiful Bike schwag contest on FaceBook and showed just a portion of a frame that had most recently swept the RBA power rangers off our feet. We asked readers to identify the bike and tell us what bike they thought was the most beautiful. We received all kinds of guessed and opinions. The correct answer was the bike above - the Calfee Dragonfly. This bike is simply amazing and it will be on display at the Handmade Bike show in Austin. It's a bike, actually like many others in attendance, that you really have to see up close to truly appreciate - just another reason for you to attend.
BUT WAIT, THERE ARE MANY, MANY MORE BEAUTIFUL BIKES...

AS FOR THE CONTEST ENTRIES...
1) The bike looks like a Calfee. I think Dragonfly.
2) Most beautiful bike – Alexi Grewal’s ’84 Pinarello Montello SLX. It was a specially painted for the Denver Spoke race team. No other bike to that point had been painted to stand out in a crowd. It was a white bike with Red, Blue and Yellow accents plus chromed fork, stays. Whether you liked the fade paint or not, it ushered in a new era of bicycles – they weren’t single colored modes of transpiration. They could be rolling works of art. Many companies tried to follow, but few succeeded.
Jon Sauer - THE WINNER!
St. Paul, MN
2) Most beautiful bike: Kirk Frameworks Campana - Sleek, understated and wild all in the same design. Thanks for offering the contest
Dan Caplan
Kansas City, MO
2. The most beautiful bike may be rusty, weigh 22 lbs., with it's lightest wheelset on board, or it could be the latest carbon fibre wonder with a price equivalent to a downpayment on a reasonable residence. No matter how you cut it, the most beautiful bike is the one you straddle to catch that youthful wind in your face feeling that it's great to be alive and riding.
Charles Sinclair
Victoria, BC, Canada
2. What do you think is the most beautiful bike - and why?
My 2006 Trek Madone, 5.9 SL with the Discovery team color scheme and most importantly the reason why, is because I was able to get Lance Armstrong to sign the top tube!
Jack Nosco
Newbury Park, CA.
2) 2011 S-Works Tarmac SL3 Sram Red - The white frame and minimal touches of blue on the top tube and fork are sexy. It's clean and sleek and not messed up by gaudy colors. The blue on the rims tie everything together really well. If only Sram would do a limited edition BLUE edition. That would make this perfect!
John Nichols
Calgary, Alberta
2) The most beautiful bike is a Vanilla Speedvagen Road bike because they are simple, beautiful, understated works of art.
Tony Weaver
2. The most beautiful bike is a bike made by an artisan for a rider, fitting his or her measurements and frame material preference(s), for the type of riding its owner designates. And it must be pleasing to at least the rider's sense of aesthetics with a completely horizontal top tube. It must also be equipped with Campagnolo Super Record components. My preferences for components not made by Campy would include Speedplay pedals, Fizik Aliante saddle, 3T stem, handlebar and seatpost, DT Swiss RR585 wheel set and Continental tires. My preference for frame material is Columbus EL/OS steel, specifically a Richard Sachs in his red & yellow color scheme.
Amos Perrine
Charleston, WV.
2. Felt B16 TT bike. I can hear you saying, "Really?" Yes. really. I will tell you why. I just bought this sweet ride as a reward for losing 100 pounds. I am shooting for the Idaho State Time Trial Championships, something I never thought I would ever be abel to do a couple of years ago. Now, I have a real, serious shot at it. I train on this bike lake a mad man, and I love it.
Steven D. Taylor
2) NeilPryde Alize: With so many bikes indistinguishable from each other, except for paint color, NeilPryde seems to have made a concerted effort to offer something unique in a mass produced bike. They are to be applauded. Most people will believe that what is most beautiful is between their legs, so it is very subjective indeed. Custom bikes win hands down but as they are one offs, beauty remains in the eye of the rider.
Peter G Salmon
Washington, DC
2) I believe that the answer to number 2 has to be my bike, a Kuota Kharma 2009. It’s the most beautiful bike because it’s mine, has great lines, modern aero design and carries all 220 pounds of me up and down the hills around Wellington, New Zealand.
Ran Mayron
Mornington, Wellington, New Zealand
2. The Pinarello Dogma. While I could never do this bike justice as far as speed goes, I am an artist so I certainly appreciate the sensuous form and the impression of movement even as it is sitting still. Almost like a Thoroughbred, tensed and waiting for the gate to open. Beautiful.
