Sure, it's two weeks before the Tour de France starts and the cycling world remains fixated on the fistfight to come between Lance and AC (it should be sweet). The month of June however is also when all the big bike companies - especially those who need to get their new bikes underneath team riders in France - start rolling out their new year models.
And so it was that Spanish bike brand Orbea jumped out of the gate with the following release on their new Orca. Within the next few weeks we'll be seeing plenty of new 2011 bikes and products so stay tuned.
Racer Influenced Orbea’s professional athletes and our dedicated group of engineers and designers, work closely together to determine what is required and requested from a bicycle to be the very best. The application of our latest technology such as SSN, Attraction, DCR and AIZonE is the result of our experience from collaborating with the top athletes in the sport of professional cycling Who uses it? - Euskaltel-Euskadi - Andalucía Cajasur - Kelly Benefits USA - Orbea Continental - Craig Alexander, Ironman World Champion
SSN Size Specific Nerve
Orca is synonymous with competition. From the day it leaves our carbon molds it continues to prove that it is one of the elite bikes on the Protour due to innovation, design, technology and Orbea know-how and our long heritage in competitive cycling. Not only do professionals need the best bike, Orbea owners worldwide, who slip on their jersey, helmet and shoes and set out to conquer new challenges. Long rides and races where, as in the ProTour, a bike is needed that allows maximum performance and optimum transfer of power in each pedal stroke.
Introducing the evolution of our Size Specific Nerve technology. Initially, Orbea engineers created this technology to optimize the structure of the frame according to the different sizes offered. After four years in the market, the SSN technology applied to the 2011 Orca represents a qualitative leap in the design and creation of frames.
- SSN enables Orbea to create six sizes for men and four for women. On the basis of structures with variable and optimized tube diameters, taking into account the stiffness ratios and the critical points of the frame, 10 sizes are individually conceived, 100% exclusive and balanced with a laminate of carbon fiber-specific for each size. 10 completely unique frames, not one frame in 10 sizes.
- Minimized weight and improved stiffness are achieved because the mass evolves to the cyclist’s advantage. Through SSN technology the force is distributed to the critical points, achieving a durable and optimal response for riders at peak performance.
The unionnnn of these two features we have called SSN, Size Specific Nerve. A technological development from Orbea with a clear goal: maximum performance and rider satisfaction.
DCR Direct Cable Routing We have created a unique cable-routing system that very efficiently routes the cable paths to the brakes and derailleurs. Created by Orbea in 2010 as a key design element of the second generation Alma, we have introduced this innovation to the Orca because of its efficient response at all levels, its smoothness of operation and the ultra clean lines it gives the design. Cables are protected from the elements, minimizing friction and multiplying durability. - Maximum smoothness - Minimum friction -Minimum maintenance - Seamless integration into the frame design
Spanish Styling
The fork and rear triangle of the new Orca have been designed with improved shaping to optimize your performance. Its purpose is to absorb vibrations and irregularities of the road without compromising lateral stiffness, maximizing performance on the bike and achieving optimal pedaling efficiency.
Traction force- compression (what are you talking about here?) that we have on the rear stays is converted into shear forces through the shaping. The result is a bike designed for competition that gives the rider an optimal response for rides requiring heavy-duty physical performance: - Vibrations transmitted to the rider are minimized, increasing the performance on the bike. - Optimization of traction, whatever the terrain, resulting in better acceleration, sprinting and bike control. - Better power transfer is achieved. - Maximized control.
The AIZonE Concept
The Aizone Project (Aerodynamic Investigation Zone) developed in the San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel, has enabled Orbea to achieve extensive knowledge on aerodynamics. Thus, on the new Orca we have optimized the aerodynamics by 14%. I.e., we have reduced the drag or frictional surface, achieving a faster and more stable bike. Greater control and stability: Reducing the distance between the structure and the rotational parts
The importance of reducing the distance between the structure of the bike and rotational parts (e.g. wheels) is critical to minimize turbulence. Turbulence is due to the movement of a fluid in which the pressure and velocity at each point fluctuates very irregularly, resulting in eddies. These disturbances are in conflict with the progress of the bike and reducing them enables us to move forward faster and more smoothly.
The shortest distance between the fork and rear triangle in the area near the rim, generates less turbulence and puts up lower wind resistance. With this in mind, we have brought both the both the fork and rear triangle as near to the rim as possible, minimizing the turbulence as much as possible and thus achieving one of the most stable competitive bikes with the greatest control on the market.
More speed. The Ordu droplet applied to the seatpost and seat tube of the Orca
Orbea has identified two key points in developing an even faster bike, stiffness and aerodynamics. Both questions should be taken into account to achieve a bicycle which is not only fast but with optimum power transmission. This is one of the premises under which Ordu was conceived, and is the guideline followed in each of the bicycles to which this know-how is applied.
The identification of the droplet as the most aerodynamic element in the world, led us to give this shape to the head tube and the seatpost of the Ordu. This innovation has now been applied to the new seatpost and seat tube of the Orca, with which we have created the fastest bike in the peleton.
Reducing the Orca's drag (grs.) Rear Triangle: 14 gr Clamp: 17 gr Headset and Fork: 15 Seatpost + Seat Tube: 10 gr Diagonal tube: 8 gr Total: 64 grams of drag reduction. Equivalent to a 14% reduction of the surface of the bicycle.
New sizes, better adaptation
Numerous morphological studies we have conducted on our current users, have led us to develop new sizes that allow for greater unionnnn and better performance on the bike. Our working group was led by UCI Pro Tour team, Euskaltel-Euskadi, the Debabarrena cyclist group, top Spanish female cyclist Anna Sanchís, as well as numerous fans from the Orbea environment.
The new sizes are as follows. Men: 48-51-53 (New!) -55 (New!) -57 - 60 Women: 47 (New!) -49-51 (New!) -53. Carbon Gold & Silver Orbea masters knowledge on design and construction of carbon bikes to perfection. Our wide experience accumulated in this material has led us to create bikes that meet the needs of the most demanding two-wheel users in the world.
Orbea Carbon is a composite comprising of high modulus carbon fibers which create structures with optimum stiffness, strength, lightness and vibration absorption. Ultimately, the best qualities to create the perfect frames. Orbea Monocoque
The stress is divided out in an optimal manner, throughout the entire structure, there are no joints, no points of unionnnn and therefore the critical areas are minimized. The means your frame can withstand as many kilometers as you desire Orbea Design.
Orbea Design is based on, what are for us, the four essential elements in the design of a bicycle: bicycle lovers, the most modern technology, the process of creation and design trends. The logo we have chosen for the Orbea Design explains this perfectly: each one of these concepts forms the centerpiece of our work. Oversize Headtube
The 1 1/8 and 1 ½ headset tubes lighten the fork and increase the front end stiffness and agility. BB30
The BB30 International Standard provides the specifications for an oversized bottom bracket shell for a bike frame. This standard allows for Direct-fit, pressed-in bearings and a 30 mm spindle.
The system saves weight by accepting a 30mm aluminum spindle and eliminating cups that would normally hold the bearings.
The oversized bottom bracket of the frame provides more area to attach larger down tube, seat tube and chain stays to better resist deflection from pedaling forces.
