June 25, 2009

2010 SUN VALLEY PRESS CAMP
Have A First Look at Some Of The Exciting New Products That You'll No Doubt Be Hearing About In The Future

When the shuttle bus stopped in front of the Sun Valley Lodge we all knew that this had the makings of a good trip! Despite the awesome scenery, Sun Valley has a limited road network making the Idaho locale far more suited as a mountain bike destination.

As with every industry meeting of this sort, there was no shortage of bike talk, riding, more bike talk, good eating and plenty of time in the hotel room typing & watching TV. As I write this, a great dinner at the Ketchum Grill was just had where they served up a nice steak and deep red Malbec combo. Table talk was centered on raising teenagers, who will win the Tour, missing Govenors and the latest legal trevails of former mountain bike champ Missy Giove. Now it's back in the room watching a combination of the inane "Little Parents Having Big Babies" (a TLC special on pregnant dwarves) to the insanely fabulous epic from Stanley Kubrick,  "Dr. Strangelove". Still, so many chanels and so many infomercials!
Although the ride on day one wasn't long, it was beautiful. Unfortunately, riding back to town on Highway 75 brought with it a crazy head wind that made the trip back seem about three times longer than the ride out. A six rider paceline was the order of the day  - except for Carlton, the Euro import who made the U.S. journos look bad as he filmed most of the ride from his bike while we struggled just to hold onto the bars with both hands.

QUOTE: "Mr. President, I'm beginning to smell a big fat Commie rat!" George C. Scott to Peter Sellars in the fabulous Dr. Stangelove.

The morning sessions were spent in classroom style settings where the individual company reps could showcase their product and answer questions. Chance Regina from Blue Cycles was happy to talk about their unique TT bike buyer's program whereby anyone who buys a Triad TT/Tri bike gets a free hour long session in a pro level wind tunnel in North Carolina.

This is the view I had outside my window...James Huang at the wheel of the Zamboni and some awfully beautiful green patch mountains in the distance - sweet!

Looks like I have a new love interest in life.

QUOTE: "Mr. President, we must not allow a mine shaft gap!"  More Dr. Strangelovean brilliance.
