ASK RBA: ASK RC: SHIMANO DURA ACE AND ULTEGRA COMPATIBILITY
February 15, 2010

I need to replace my 2008 Dura Ace rear derailleur, and I would like to know if the newest Dura Ace 7900 rear derailleur is compatible with my 2008 Ultegra shift/brake levers? If so, is the front derailleur compatible as well? Can I still use Ultegra cassettes and chains or do I need to change both to Dura Ace on these as well?
– Rod

As long as it’s 10-speed, you can mix and match all of Shimano’s shift/brake levers with their derailleurs – same with the chains and cassettes. The 7900 brake lever geometry is different so your Ultegra caliper may feel firmer when it clamps the rim should you upgrade to Dura-Ace shift/brake levers.
