The search for an over-the-counter pro-level tubular wheelset may be over. Nine G pieces together the Exos—an outstanding pair of 55-millimeter-deep, carbon fiber aero-profile racing wheels using DT Swiss components, and then hand builds them to exacting specifications. With a suggested retail price of $1999, the Exos wheelset is intended for time trial and road racing. The pair weigh 1390 grams without quick releases.
Deep profile carbon rims are available from a number of sources, but the Exos T5 steps up to the front with a specially grooved braking track to prevent pulsing and provide more aluminum-like stopping performance. Smooth-rolling DT Swiss 240S hubs and highly tensioned Aerolite bladed stainless steel spokes (24 two-cross rear, 20 radial front) keep the rigid carbon rim laterally stiff. We tested the Exos with the supplied Vittoria Corsa Evo-CX 21mm tubular tires, which are up to the Nine G wheel’s performance expectations. Our time trial times dropped measurably, and all who used the Exos for training races brought back positive reports from the outset. Exos passed muster in gusty crosswinds, requiring minimal corrections. Braking performance was slightly better than non-treated carbon wheels, but nothing to write home about. For a tubular wheel, the Exos is not the lightweight wheelset that time trialers dream about, but this one pair can double for time trials and road racing without compromise.
