BOBKE: BOBKE'S STAGE ONE REVIEW Bob Roll July 4, 2010

STAGE ONE That was some serious crash induced pandemonium today. Leading up to this year’s Tour there were plenty of questions about the top sprinters and who had the winning form. Today’s stage was set to provide the answer, but after all those crashes we didn’t get those answers we were looking for. It was great to see Petacchi win again, it’s been a few years since he’s taken a Tour stage. Stage two should be a little safer with those climbs at the end maybe breaking things up a little more.
Even though we weren’t in America today, the sprints still provided us with plenty of fireworks! Yea baby, from James Cagney and “Born on the 4th of July” to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in The USA”, you never think about how great America is until you’re not there anymore. It’s easy to forget what America has to offer when you watch your job get outsourced or you lose your house, but spend a couple of days in Belgium and you can’t wait to get home. They have a much broader social net over here, but on an individual level, less self-determination – I’m not sure if it’s worth the trade-off. I miss America more when I travel than I dwell on the freedom when I’m there.
